Reddit is the trickiest of the five, and the honest answer starts right there: buying upvotes in a moderated subreddit is the fastest way to get banned, because content manipulation is written into Reddit's own Content Policy. Karma is the score your account builds up from the votes your posts and comments receive. It's not an audience number — it's a track record of acceptance. Many communities use a minimum karma threshold as an automatic entry filter, which is why it becomes an obsession for anyone who wants to post in large subreddits.

Profile followers are something else: accounts that chose to follow your username. And subreddit subscribers are a third thing: people inside a community, which might not even be yours. Three numbers, three meanings — and a costly mistake if you mix them up.

Profile Followers: The Lowest-Friction Use

By far the least problematic of the three, because it only moves a counter on your own profile and doesn't affect any community's ranking. Subreddit Subscribers: Only for What's Yours

A new community has a real cold-start problem: nobody joins a three-member subreddit. Boosting that initial number is the whole case for subreddit subscribers. The caveat is a hard one, worth spelling out: this only makes sense for a community you moderate, and even then, the number doesn't generate a single post. A subreddit with ten thousand subscribers and no new topic in a week is a visible graveyard.

It exists, it's in the catalog, and the Reddit post upvotes page is open for business. But here's the honest version: in any actively moderated subreddit, coordinated voting is the most closely watched behavior on the platform. Moderators and automated tools look specifically for voting patterns that fall outside the norm, and the usual consequence is post removal and an account ban — sometimes for the entire community involved.

If there's a case where this makes any sense, it's in your own small subreddit, where you control moderation. Outside of that, the expected cost outweighs the gain, and saying otherwise would be a bad sell.

What this does NOT fix

• It doesn't fix karma. Karma comes from real votes on real content; no profile counter replaces that.
• It won't get you into a closed community. Entry filters look at account history and age, not followers.
• It doesn't generate comments. Reddit is a discussion platform: a post with no comments doesn't rise and doesn't convince anyone.
• It offers no protection from moderators. Subreddit moderation is human, runs on its own rules, and doesn't need technical proof to hand out a ban.

What Does Reddit's Documentation Say About Vote Manipulation?

It's in Rule 2 of the Reddit Content Policy, and the passage is worth quoting: "Participate authentically in communities you have a personal interest in, and don't spam or engage in disruptive behavior (including content manipulation) that interferes with Reddit communities." The same page notes that each community's culture is shaped by its moderators' rules and its members' upvotes and downvotes — in other words, voting is treated as the site's central trust mechanism.

A transparency note: Reddit's help center has an article specifically about what counts as vote manipulation, but it blocks automated reading, so we don't quote it here. The Content Policy, which is public and readable, is enough to make the point on its own.
